After two decades teaching Spanish to high school students, Janet Tan wanted a change.

鈥淚 just got to the point where teaching wasn鈥檛 doing it for me. I鈥檇 hit a brick wall. It was time to do something else.鈥

Finding that 鈥渟omething else鈥 at first proved elusive.

鈥淚 thought I had no marketable skills. I could speak Spanish, but that was not enough,鈥 she said.

Janet applied for retail and office positions with no success. She considered earning a health care credential, 鈥淏ut I鈥檝e always been more interested in language than science.鈥

Finally, Janet found her experience and interests were a fit with 91制片厂鈥檚 Paralegal Studies program. But she had a perception that she might be too old to return to college.

"I was sure I鈥檇 be the only older person in class,鈥 she said. 鈥淲hen I attended my first class, which was in contract law, I discovered I wasn鈥檛 the only over-40-year-old student in the classroom.鈥

As students shared their stories during that class, Janet also learned that there were two students who had master鈥檚 degrees like she did. Many were also career changers.

鈥淚 knew then that I wasn鈥檛 in this alone.鈥 In fact, Janet stayed in touch with some of those students in that first class throughout her program and even after graduation.

As part of her program, Janet served an internship with the Law Offices of Constance Doyle in Palatine, a firm that specializes in immigration, family and criminal law. After her internship, she went on to be hired by the firm.

鈥淢y internship was the best experience. I learned so much. Every student should serve an internship as part of their education.鈥

Working in an office that specializes in immigration law allows Janet to use her background in Spanish. Working in the legal field also aligns with her interests in writing and her attention to detail.

鈥淎s it turns out, I did have marketable skills,鈥 she said.

Janet points to 91制片厂鈥檚 paralegal program鈥檚 American Bar Association (ABA)鈥揳pproval as an endorsement of quality and for the credibility it lends the program. 鈥淚 would not enroll in a paralegal program that was not ABA-approved,鈥 she added.

To adult learners who may be at their own career crossroads, Janet offered this advice:

  • Audit your skills and strengths.
  • If you鈥檙e not sure where to start, take a few classes.
  • Find something you enjoy and stick with it.
  • Most of all, don鈥檛 wait.

鈥淚 look back now, and if I had started twenty years ago, I鈥檇 be an immigration lawyer today,鈥 she said.
