For Fourth Dimension Flavors founders Sean and Donna Christopherson, food has always been about more than ingredients. It is about bringing people together, creating community, and sharing experiences that leave a lasting impression. What began as a passion for cooking and serving others has grown into a thriving family business that is steadily expanding throughout the Chicagoland area.

The name, Fourth Dimension Flavors, carries special meaning for the Christophersons. As people of faith, they wanted the business name to reflect their commitment to keeping God at the center of their lives and their work. For them, "Fourth Dimension" serves as a spiritual reference and a reminder of the values that guide their entrepreneurial journey. Fourth Dimension Flavors also reflects their passion for creating memorable culinary experiences. As the Christophersons like to say, they're here to "rocket your taste buds into the Fourth Dimension,鈥 bringing bold flavors, comfort, and a little excitement to every bowl they serve.

Located in Elk Grove Village, Illinois, Fourth Dimension Flavors was founded by Sean and Donna Christopherson in the winter of 2024. Sean brings more than 25 years of culinary experience, having worked in a variety of restaurant environments and positions throughout the Chicago area. Along the way, he developed a deep appreciation for food, hospitality, and the people who helped shape his career. Donna spent many years working on the front end of restaurants, building her own expertise in customer service and operations.

The couple first met through another shared passion: music. After performing together at a local picnic, their friendship blossomed into marriage in 2023. Combining their restaurant experience, entrepreneurial spirit, and love for community, they decided to launch a business centered around something simple, comforting, and universally loved鈥攕oup.

What started with a single recipe and a single farmers market has evolved into a growing family venture. Today, their son Aiden has joined the business, learning the craft both in the kitchen and at local markets, making Fourth Dimension Flavors a true family operation.

As first-time business owners, Sean and Donna knew they had the culinary expertise to create an exceptional product, but they wanted guidance on the financial and operational aspects of building a sustainable business. They were introduced to the Illinois Small Business Development Center (SBDC) at 91制片厂 after a close friend recommended Business Advisor Marge Johnsson, describing her as 鈥渢he smartest businesswoman I have ever met.鈥

The Christophersons initially sought assistance with one of the most critical aspects of running a food business: pricing. They wanted to ensure their soups were priced fairly for customers while also supporting long-term business growth. As demand increased and wholesale opportunities emerged, they needed to understand how pricing strategies would change between direct-to-consumer and wholesale sales. Later, they faced another significant entrepreneurial decision鈥攄etermining whether the business was strong enough to allow Sean to leave his full-time job and dedicate himself fully to Fourth Dimension Flavors.

The Illinois SBDC at 91制片厂 provided individualized advising to help the Christophersons confidently navigate these challenges.

Business Advisor Kevin McVearry worked closely with Sean to develop a comprehensive pricing strategy. Kevin provided a detailed costing template that allowed Sean to itemize every ingredient used in each soup recipe. The tool gave the business a reliable method for evaluating costs, setting prices, and maintaining profitability. Today, Sean continues to use the same template whenever a new soup is introduced to the menu.

Business Advisor Marge Johnsson provided critical support as the business approached a major turning point. Marge helped develop six-month and one-year financial forecasts that allowed Sean and Donna to evaluate the viability of expanding the business. Through careful planning and analysis, the forecasts gave Sean the confidence to leave his full-time position and commit himself fully to growing Fourth Dimension Flavors.

With support from the Illinois SBDC at 91制片厂, the Christophersons were able to make informed decisions that strengthened both their confidence and their business foundation.

Since working with the Illinois SBDC at 91制片厂, Fourth Dimension Flavors has experienced significant growth, including:

  • Expanding from one farmers market location to four markets in Palatine, Batavia, Lake Bluff, and Skokie
  • Growing from offering a single soup variety to featuring eleven soups throughout the year
  • Developing customer favorites including Beef Chili and Roasted Eggplant and Lentil Soup
  • Establishing wholesale accounts and expanding into family-owned grocery stores, including Prisco鈥檚 Finer Foods in Aurora, Illinois
  • Launching an online ordering website to provide customers with additional purchasing options
  • Achieving steady year-over-year business growth and a continually expanding customer base

The Christophersons credit the Illinois SBDC at Harper with helping them make important business decisions while providing the guidance needed to transform their vision into a sustainable enterprise.

鈥淲e all need guidance when we are going after our dreams. The Illinois SBDC supported us on our path to seeing those dreams come to fruition, and we are beyond grateful!鈥 鈥 Sean and Donna Christopherson

Looking ahead, Fourth Dimension Flavors plans to continue expanding into additional family-owned grocery stores and create more opportunities for customers to purchase their products beyond farmers' market hours. With a growing product line, expanding distribution channels, and a strong family foundation, Sean, Donna, and Aiden are continuing to build a business rooted in community, quality, and the simple joy of sharing great food with others.
