After an unfocused year at community college and time working in construction, he returned to higher education at Southern Illinois University Carbondale. There, after changing majors several times, he found his calling in physical education and safety education, combining his love of football with a desire to teach and mentor others.

During 35 years as 91制片厂鈥檚 head football coach, Coach Eli built more than a championship program鈥攈e built relationships. A member of the NJCAA Coaches Hall of Fame and the all-time leader in NJCAA coaching wins, he was known for offering students honest, practical guidance rooted in his own experiences.

His story resonated with Karla Basilio, the inaugural recipient of the Coach John R. Eliasik Scholarship. Karla plans to become a physical education teacher and coach women鈥檚 basketball. Like Coach Eli, she discovered her sport later than many others and is determined to turn her passion into a career that helps students grow.

Established in Coach Eli鈥檚 honor, the scholarship supports full-time students studying health, wellness, physical education, kinesiology or related fields. Through recipients like Karla, his legacy continues鈥攈elping students transform passion into purpose.
