11th Annual Assessment Conference and Share Fair

Summary

The Community of Practice on Grit, Growth Mindset, and Metacognition worked to help students develop these skills by introducing key research, measuring student progress through assessments, and fostering a culture of encouragement 鈥� presenting their findings at the 2019 Assessment and Share Fair.

Our goal is to help our students develop as learners, teach them to be gritty and have a growth mindset,  and reflect on their progress by:

  • Incorporating the work of Dr. McGuire, Dr. Carol Dweck, Dr. Angela Duckworth, and Eduardo Briceno in our teaching approach
  • Introduce the ideas of grit and growth mindset
  • Assessing their level of grit using the Grit Scale and growth mindset using PERTS mindset modules
  • Comparing scores on quizzes and/or exams before and after interventions
  • Encouraging students through inspiration and leading by example

We have shared our experiences, gone on a conference (or two), and appreciated and shared the work being done in this realm by others and among us. Often we have found ways that these topics inspire our personal as well as our professional lives.

After Exam 1, students:

  • Viewed Angela Duckworth's TED talk on grit
  • Assessed their level of Grit using Angela Duckworth's Grit Scale
  • Reflected on what their thoughts about the video and the scores they received in a 5 point extra credit assignment
  • Took Exam 2 after completing Grit assignment and scores were compared

Result: Overall students' scores on Exam 2 improved from an average grade of 77% to an average grade of 82%.
